On Tuesday the 24th of March, The American University of Rome’s Student Government surprised students and faculty with an excellent gift: an on campus food truck! Ben Potesky, President of Student Government loved the idea of having a food truck, he was able to hire Pizza e Mortazza for a whole afternoon. Tales of the Table went around campus to see how AUR students felt about this new experience.
The students loved it. Nicole Fersko, resident student said “ It was super accessible, I didn’t even have to leave the garden for lunch.” Pizza e Mortazza offered warm paninos for less than 5 euros, providing a great Italian style lunch for all.
Study Abroad student Joey O’Brien loved the new feel of the campus with this event. He says: “I very much enjoyed it. I tried something I never had before. The food truck was a great idea, AUR is normally a come-and-go university but this heightens the student atmosphere.”
Gabby Gelardi, resident student said “ I think it’s a really good idea, it is the first time in all my years I have seen it, it’ great.” Apart from the finger food at presentations food is not always available on campus. Food trucks, originating mainly from American culture are rare in Italy, only seen at few festivals. In fact, this upcoming weekend in Rome, Testaccio is holding the Streeat Food Truck Festival, bringing the food truck culture together with the Italian street food.
Overall the campus food truck was a positive new event at AUR and the university hopes student government will continue to offer great experiences such as this.
